At least ten protesters were killed and over 500 others injured by the Sudanese security forces, the Central Committee of the Sudanese Doctors said on Friday.
Dr. Abdurrahman Ali Dobora, a member of the committee said the majority of the killings were a result of direct live bullets to their heads and chests.
“Here (at the Khartoum Hospital), we lost one due to a direct gunshot in his head and we have two hundred injured porters with various injuries from minor, middle, and severe and unfortunately, two of them lost their eyes,” Dr. Dobora said.
Police used excessive force to disburse the pro-democracy protesters in Khartoum, Omdurman, Khartoum North, and all the 18 states’ capitals. Internet services and telephone lines were shut down.
Dr. Dabora said despite limited access to the internet to collect data from the fields, the preliminary reports indicate that between 500 to 600 protesters have been injured in Khartoum alone.
“Another hospital in Bahri, the total number of injuries when I communicated with them was about 150. And here in this hospital [the injured] are 200,” Dr. Dabora revealed, adding the same number could have been injured in Omdurman.
About 96 police and 129 armed forces were injured by protestors, according to the Police.
The protesters reportedly destroyed water-jet vehicles and set trees on fire in gardens and yards east of the White Nile Bridge, next to hotels and a mosque.
An unknown number of protesters are being detained at Soba prison and Omdurman Women’s Prison with criminal charges. It is not clear when they will be tried.
The Emergency Lawyers documented150 demonstrators, including 27 female detainees are being detained.
Osman Haidar, a member of the resistance committee, who participated in the protests said they want an immediate end to the military ruling to pave way for a democratic civilian government.
“The protests carried very clear points on falling down [over throwing] of Abdl Fattah Al Burhan and the military council and end the process of the coup and the establishment of a civil authority and the democratic system of government in Sudan,” Haidar said.
The United States Embassy in Khartoum condemned the use of force against demonstrators and described it as a “tragic” loss of life.
“We urge all parties to resume negotiations and call on peaceful voices to rise above those who advocate for or commit violence. Perpetrators must be held accountable.” The embassy posted on its official Facebook page.
